    Description

Located in downtown Torrington, the Torrington Historical Society operates two permanent exhibits of the town's history - the Hotchkiss-Fyler House Museum and the John H. Thompson Library and Archive. The organization sought an expansion to enhance the Torrington Cultural District by creating a unique destination where people can gather to explore and learn community history.

The Torrington History Education Center expands the facilities with a renovation of the existing carriage house directly behind the museum and a new, modern addition. It will include a 3,000 sf object storage space, a 1,400 sf archival storage with a public reading room on the first floor, and a 2,400 sf gallery space and an outdoor patio event space on the second floor. The new addition will connect to the historic carriage house with a glass bridge and a small courtyard provides a landscaped buffer between the two buildings. The project will address a critical need for a climate-controlled museum and more space for expanded programs, exhibits, and events including a fully accessible research library.
