We are working with the Monterey Bay Aquarium on a new Ocean Education and Leadership Center located along the Pacific Ocean on 625 Cannery Row, two short blocks from the existing Aquarium. Each year, more than 110,000 school-children and teachers take part in education programs offered by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Demand for the programs far exceeds the space available, which sparked the most ambitious undertaking since opening the Aquarium—the new Ocean Education and Leadership Center.
Classes in the new center will still be offered in conjunction with onsite education experiences at the aquarium itself for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The mission of Monterey Bay Aquarium—and the new center— “is to inspire conservation of our oceans” and has led to the next generation of leaders in our community ready to act on behalf of our environment.
The new center will house Four STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning labs to accommodate 40 students each, and a large multi-use space for workshops and video teleconferences, a new pre-aquarium orientation space and a lunch area for visiting school groups. A staff of 35 instructors and volunteers will also be housed in the facility along with collaborative meeting spaces for staff, teachers and youth.
